早操歌 -Morning Exercise Song

This is a great body movement song, and is an echo song, great for getting the kids to sing back the Chinese!  We sing this in class often.

I originally learned this song from some American dude on youtube, who had videoed his adult Mandarin students practicing it in class, but I can’t seem to find it now, so can’t reference it…if you know of the Dude’s name / link let me know so that I can link it.  But I did have a MP3 on my hard drive of it, so here it is for you to listen to…

开门关门 – Open the door, Shut the door

This is another one I wrote myself, as kids love the Open Shut Them song!  So sing this to the same tune!  The meaning is totally different though, but obvious through the actions!  Lots of opposites in this song, from open to shut, stand up to sit down, and head to toe!

English translation is : Open the door, shut the door, open the door, shut the door, give a little clap, Open the door, shut the door, open the door, shut the door, touch your toes, stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, give a little clap, stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, touch your head.  Children put hands in prayer position and open and shut them to imitate a door opening and shutting for the first verse.  Children respond immedately as they know the tune so well.

We often, as with other songs, choose to sing this one 快 kuài /fast or  慢  màn /slow.  Kids love doing movement songs in speed and skow motion, and the slow version allows them to listen to and sing the song with very clear drawn out syllables.

 

唱歌跳舞 – Hokey Pokey

Well this song is called 唱歌跳舞  which is literally  ‘sing songs and dance’ in English!

This is just full of learning opportunities, and also gets the kids up and dancing like they are at a party!

It has position/location sentence structure (inside, outside), left and right, and body parts.

But it is the repeated 把 construction that is the winner for me!   The 把 sentence pattern in Chinese is a nightmare for older students to get their heads around, yet little kids get to hear this sentence pattern in this song, and so many other songs and classroom instructions, so many times that they will never have a problem with understanding the grammar of it when they get older!

Translation is much the same as English with a few changes: You put your right hand in, you put your right hand out, You put your right hand in, and you shake it all about, sing and dance and you turn around, everybody laugh.  Repeat with left hand, right foot, left foot and whole body.

两只老虎 – Two Tigers Song

We sing this song at different times, because once the kids know it, it can be used to reinforce measure words, the change of 二 to 两 when counting things, body parts, and the concept of 没有 （none, or doesn’t have any!).
