朋友 !- Friends!

A new term with some new faces!  A great chance to integrate Mandarin into an activity that helps the students relax and make ‘Friends’.

So the value of “Friendliness” or ‘友好’ will be used to connect with each other and our learning.  I will use this artwork as a springboard (taken from Monica Bastiste website, where you can purchase her Yoga for Little Bears book).

The students will do this activity together many times over the term, and will become familiar with the following language:

小朋友们,手拉手。

看你的朋友的眼睛。

闭上眼睛。

呼吸, 呼吸, 闭上眼睛, 让我们变得朋友,

让你的脚变成地球的朋友,  让我们变成地球的朋友

Let our feet be the earth’s friend / let’s be the earth’s friend.

There are lots of connections to prior learning, especially ‘friend’ language, body parts, and I often use the ‘地球’ in class (my blow up world!) for games in class.  As children learn more and more about how to talk about Saving the Environment in Chinese, the world, or 地球 (dìqiú) will become a familiar word!

Another connection, you may have seen this episode of 巧虎 before, on the 剪刀石头布 (Paper Rock Scissors) post. But before it gets to that segment, there is a cool segment to watch about how to make friends in Chinese, good viewing while we are talking about ‘friends!’ Here is how to make friends in Chinese.  The language in the segment is typed out below.

要一起玩的时候, 可以说 “你好, 可以一起玩吗?” “好啊, 我们一起玩”

Yào yīqǐ wán de shíhòu, kěyǐ shuō “nǐ hǎo, kěyǐ yīqǐ wán ma?” “Hǎo a, wǒmen yīqǐ wán”

When you want to play with someone, you can say ‘Hello, can I play with you?’ (They say back ) ‘Yeah, let’s play!’

快乐!Happy!

When a song comes out that kids LOVE, it is just begging to be used for all sorts of learning opportunities.  When my kids come home belting out a song because it is cool at school, we find a Mandarin version to learn, so we can belt it out in Mandarin! Or better still get the kids to create their own Mandarin version.

This is what the teacher at Brentwood School in the US does with her middle school students, and here is their version of Pharrell’s Happy in Mandarin.  I feel the students have done a fantastic job! And all we have to do is learn it to sing along and be HAPPY!  My kids love this song, so singing it in English or Mandarin to them makes them just as HAPPY!

I have typed out the lyrics in characters and toned pinyin for your convenience.  If you want to know the direct translation, then just copy and paste the characters into Google Translate, it will give you a basic literal meaning!

How to write 上 and 下

Just playing around with a new tool,  so thought I would use 上 and 下 to demonstrate!  Last term we explored these two characters, get a recap looking at these blog posts exploring 上下 and the Going Up Going Down Song.

吃瓢虫!Eating ladybirds!

We had lots of fun making this ladybird and video, but not as much fun as EATING it!

 As you can see cooking is a great way for kids to learn a language.  Repetitive use of 把。吧and 吗 is used, as well as position, body parts, and useful vocab to describe the yummy foods used.  We learned a new word 涂 to spread!

If you are a family learning together, start off saying a few ingredients in Chinese as you bake, and GROW FROM THERE. We learn a new word every time we bake! Here is the script:

我饿了。 我要吃瓢虫。

你要吃瓢虫吗?我们做好吃的瓢虫吧?

瓢虫的脸什么颜色?

黑色。

我们用黑巧克力吧?

把黑巧克力涂在蛋糕上。

瓢虫的翅膀什么颜色?

我们用草莓吧?

把草莓放在瓢虫的翅膀上。

Baking is a good time to use Chinese, it is a regular activity, so vocab and phrases are heard repetitively.  The kids made an iMovie of  making little apple and carrot cakes… text to the video is below.
