Santa Claus!

We learned this song last year and will practice it again so that you can all song it together as a family over Xmas Dinner!  Groovi Pauli has since shared his video of his Chinese version…. So here it is! Don’t forget you can buy Groovi Pauli’s albums on iTunes, he has a whole album of celebration festival songs!

Below the video are the pinyin lyrics and literal translation, but you can find the Chinese characters on the attached santa claus coming to town images for song that I created.

Xiǎopéngyǒu, nǐ bùyào kū
wǒmen lái yīqǐ, hāhā dà xiào
shèngdàn lǎorén jìn chéng lái liao

tā zhīdào nǐ shuìjiàole, tā zhīdào nǐ méi shuì
tā zhīdào nǐ guāi bù guāi, suǒyǐ nǐ yào guāi

literal translation:

little children, no need to cry

lets get together and be happy

santa Claus is coming to town

he knows if you are asleep, he knows if you’re not asleep

he knows if you are good or not good, so you need to be good

Let it go!

The children have really enjoyed listening to relaxing Chinese music/songs while they do their Moon Festival artwork, but  随它吧  (’Let it Go’ Mandarin version) has been a hit and I have been ordered to link this video on the blog!  It has opened their eyes that this song (and the movie) has been translated into over 25 different languages!

Here is the Mandarin (China mainland) version.  Very beautiful to listen to, and even though a tricky song to learn off by heart in Mandarin, kids enjoy singing the 随它吧  bit in Chinese!

Here are the lyrics:

Mid Autumn Festival

Mid Autumn Festival (Or the Moon Festival) is on the 8th Sept this year.  Who better than Groovi Pauli to give us a great song and video to learn all about traditions for this festival.  You can purchase his ‘Celebrations in Chinese 4 Kids’ that this song comes from on album on iTunes.

Here are the lyrics:

月亮月亮圆圆圆 yuè liang yuè liang yuán yuán yuán
(moon, moon, round round round)

(moon cakes, moon cakes, fragrant fragrant fragrant)

(Chang-E Chang-E fly fly fly) Chang E is the name of the moon fairy!

(Mid-Autumn, Mid-Autumn, Mid-Autumn Festival)

Jumping on the Sofa!

Is Everyone Ready for Fun?

chicken sofa1

This is a great book by Jan Thomas, as children just have this innate desire to jump on the sofa, and so relate to the cows’ inability to control themselves, their regret as they are reminded they shouldn’t do it, and how they get around promising not to do it again!  As the reader, I weave myself as a parent sharing the chicken’s frustration, so the children are really drawn into this in the classroom.  It’s also really a great book to use repetitive and meaningful Chinese to the children.  It reinforces lots of phrases we use in the classroom regularly, and connects with our ‘Up Down’ lessons. (See Going Up Going Down, London Bridge, Up and Down Characters, Three Jellyfish, Exploring 上下

You can download a lovely finger puppet activity to act this story out on the author’s website Jan Thomas Books.

Here are some of the words the children hear when sharing this book in Chinese:

小鸡           xiǎo jī                            Little chicken
小牛           xiǎo niú                         Little cow

Are you ready?
Ready!
跳上跳下                      tiào shàng  tiào xià                          Jump up and down
跳舞                              tiào wǔ                                              Dance
扭来扭去                      niǔ lái niǔ qù                                   Wiggle around
在沙发上                      zài shā fā shàng                               on the sofa

别!                              biè!                                                   Don’t!
别跳!                          biè tiào!                                           Don’t jump!
别跳舞!                      biè tiào wǔ!                                     Don’t dance!

Potato Song!

While we 醒来 (wake up) all our body parts, we are enjoying this video, and it certainly does 醒来 us all up into a cool sing along dance!

Apart from its fun value, it has numbers, measure words, body parts, and a fast tongue twisting chorus to wrap our tongues around those Mandarin syllables!

Note, there is a mistake in the song…the line where they sing that the 2 potatoes have ‘4 hands’, the subtitle in the video is correct and says 4 (有四只手), but they actually sing 有两只手…2 hands!!!! But the mistake doesn’t spoil the fun factor, and when we act this out in class with Mr Potato Heads we will correct it!

Here are the lyrics。 To get pronunciation of the fast chorus line, don’t forget you can copy and paste the characters into Google Translate and press the speaker, or check out the apps that have the pinyin syllable charts and pronunciation in this post.

Friends!

A new term with some new faces!  A great chance to integrate Mandarin into an activity that helps the students relax and make ‘Friends’.

So the value of “Friendliness” or ‘友好’ will be used to connect with each other and our learning.  I will use this artwork as a springboard (taken from Monica Bastiste website, where you can purchase her Yoga for Little Bears book).

The students will do this activity together many times over the term, and will become familiar with the following language:

小朋友们,手拉手。

看你的朋友的眼睛。

闭上眼睛。

呼吸, 呼吸, 闭上眼睛, 让我们变得朋友,

让你的脚变成地球的朋友,  让我们变成地球的朋友

Xiǎopéngyǒumen, shǒu lāshǒu,

kàn nǐ de péngyǒu de yǎnjīng。

bì shàng yǎnjīng

Hūxī, hūxī, bì shàng yǎnjīng, ràng wǒmen biàn dé péngyǒu 。

ràng nǐ de jiǎo biàn chéng dìqiú de péngyǒu /  ràng wǒmen biàn chéng dìqiú de péngyǒu)

Everyone (little friends), hold hands.

Look into your friends eyes.

Close your eyes.

Breathe… lets be friends!

Let our feet be the earth’s friend / let’s be the earth’s friend.

There are lots of connections to prior learning, especially ‘friend’ language, body parts, and I often use the ‘地球’ in class (my blow up world!) for games in class.  As children learn more and more about how to talk about Saving the Environment in Chinese, the world, or 地球 (dìqiú) will become a familiar word!

Another connection, you may have seen this episode of 巧虎 before, on the 剪刀石头布 (Paper Rock Scissors) post. But before it gets to that segment, there is a cool segment to watch about how to make friends in Chinese, good viewing while we are talking about ‘friends!’ Here is how to make friends in Chinese.  The language in the segment is typed out below.

Yào yīqǐ wán de shíhòu, kěyǐ shuō “nǐ hǎo, kěyǐ yīqǐ wán ma?” “Hǎo a, wǒmen yīqǐ wán”

When you want to play with someone, you can say ‘Hello, can I play with you?’ (They say back ) ‘Yeah, let’s play!’

How to write 上 and 下

Just playing around with a new tool,  so thought I would use 上 and 下 to demonstrate!  Last term we explored these two characters, get a recap looking at these blog posts exploring 上下 and the Going Up Going Down Song.

So here is how we write 上  (going UP) and 下 (going DOWN).  Just click on the character you want to see!

thanks to Chinese Digger for the tool!

Scissors Rock Paper (cloth)

We are playing this popular finger game in Chinese at the moment.  the children have a task of teaching this game in Chinese to others in the playground, or to family members at home.

The game is exactly the same, so the children just have to learn the chant!  The only difference is in Chinese they say ‘cloth’ not paper, same concept though, it can wrap around the rock, and can be cut!

This episode of 巧虎 has a 剪刀石头布 song to sing along to at home. It is 15min 33 secs into this episode! This segment will show you how to say the Chinese, and the song explains what happens when there is a draw in this game!

Words are :

Jiǎndāo shítou bù,  jiǎndāo shítou bù
jiǎndāo hé jiǎndāo,  biàn chéngle pángxiè pá ya pá
jiǎndāo shítou bù,  jiǎndāo shítou bù
shítou hé shítou,  biàn chéngle qiǎo hǔ xiào ya xiào
jiǎndāo shítou bù,  jiǎndāo shítou bù
bù hébù,  biàn chéngle húdié fēi ya fēi

Scissors Paper Rock, Scissors Paper Rock,
Scissors and Scissors, become a crab crawling
Rock and Rock, become clever tiger laughing
Cloth and Cloth, become a butterfly flying

你好,再见!a new hello and goodbye song!

We are learning a new hello and goodbye song!  The children are so happy that they can pick out so many words that they already know from these new songs and are absorbing the new parts with ease…

We have used a fair few hello songs over the years, if you want to see the main one we use it’s on our Hello Song post.

Both our new songs are from Basho and Friends which you can see here and on YouTube, or purchase their CD from iTunes.

here is our new hello song:

颜色歌 – a new colour song!

The children will be listening to a series of new songs over the rest if this term and next term.  New songs, but familiar words!

New songs with familiar words are introduced throughout the early years, as it really boosts their self esteem!  They pick up the words they know, making connections and understanding without any explanation.  Their smiles show the light bulb moments!

Here is the new colour song we are enjoying.  It is made by ‘Basho and friends’ who make these catchy songs in many languages.  You can listen on youtube, or purchase the tracks from iTunes.  Our colour song we know so well already can be heard on the other Colour song post!
